Immanent Authority and the Making of Community Symposium
University of Bristol, July 29 2011.

A one day symposium at the Institute of Advanced Studies, University of Bristol, funded by the AHRC.

The symposium followed an innovative format, in which our eminent invited guest speakers were asked to respond to the discussions of the day, and to the Immanent Authority and the Making of Community Project, in the final session of the symposium rather than leading the day through plenaries. This was intended to encourage a sense that something was emerging from the event itself, as well as to disrupt the usual relations of authority in academic environments and to foster an atmosphere of conviviality and community. Small group workshops were an essential part of the day, in which all participants contributed to the symposium outcomes.

Invited Respondents:
  • Ash Amin (Department of Geography, Cambridge University)
  • J-D Dewsbury (School of Geographical Sciences, University of Bristol)
  • Ian James (Department of French, Cambridge University)
  • Carol Munn-Giddings (Department of Family and Community Studies, Anglia Ruskin University)
  • Kate Nash (Centre for the Study of Global Media and Democracy, Goldsmiths College)
  • Tom Osborne (School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies, University of Bristol)
