Emergent Authorities:
Creative / Performative Approaches to Democracy and Authority Research

Picture
Principal Investigator: Leila Dawney
Co-Investigator: Claire Blencowe
Project duration: Summer 2014 - Summer 2016.

This AHRC funded networking project will create durable collaborations between the Authority Research Network and colleagues in Latin America, where similar approaches to authority research are being investigated in community and local political settings, and where there is potential for research development and cross-fertilisation of ideas.

The project has involved two symposia: "Emergent Authorities and the Experience of Power” in Brighton in October 2014, and “Emergent Authorities and the Making of the Commons" in Joao Pessoa in June 2015. These symposia provided opportunities for ARN members and colleagues from universities and institutions in Brazil to hear and respond to each others' work, as well as provide opportunities for discussion, learning and research planning. After each symposium the network undertook a week-long writing and theory retreat, which provided time and space for creative thinking, collaborative writing, engagement with texts and the development of concepts and approaches.  The project has also involved two creative writing weekends with invited creative practitioners in order to facilitate the production of creative, communicable material to be used in future work and by colleagues working in community settings.

The project has also involved events on collaboration and research networking at doctoral training centres. These activities will be supported by an intuitive webspace that enables discussion and peer review and provides a platform to archive, collect and disseminate creative and academic work. This will prepare the ground for the development of a significant research project that explores new articulations of authority in community settings.
